60 trees to celebrate 60 years of ISB
Friday, 19th April 2024 – International School Brunei (ISB) launched a tree planting initiative today at its Bandar campus titled ‘60 Trees to Celebrate 60 Years’ in conjunction with the school’s 60th anniversary, marking six decades of inclusive academic excellence.
Organised by ISB in collaboration with the Brunei Climate Change Office, the ’60 Trees to Celebrate 60 Years’ initiative saw 60 tree saplings planted across ISB’s Bandar and Seria campuses, as well as ISB’s Centre for Inclusive Learning (CIL) in Panaga. This endeavour aligns with Strategy 2 of the Brunei National Climate Change Policy that aims to plant 500,000 trees to enhance the country’s forest cover by 2035.
The initiative’s launch at ISB’s Bandar campus saw Yang Mulia Awang Aliuddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Core Education), Ministry of Education attend as the guest of honour.
Also present were ISB’s Board of Directors, including Dato Seri Paduka Haji Ahmad bin Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Bakti Di-Raja Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Isa, Board Chairman; Mr. Nicholas King, Deputy Board Chairman; Haji Rashid Abdul Razak; Mr. Roy David Kurian; Ms. Sharon Tan; Mr. Jorge Francisco Vega; Hajah Nor Ashikin Haji Johari, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports; and Mr. Wong Chin Toon.
The event also saw the attendance of Mr. Abdul Matiin bin Kasim, Deputy Head at the Brunei Climate Change Office, as well as representatives from corporate sponsors including Awang Junaidi bin Haji Masri, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD), Ms. Erwienna Shafienaz Abu Bakar, Human Resources Director at Brunei Shell Petroleum Co. Sdn Bhd (BSP), Mr. Raymin Othman, Maintenance Manager at Brunei LNG Sdn Bhd, Mr. Alan Goh, Human Resources Director at Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd, and Ms. Amallina Wahab, Environment Officer at Brunei Fertilizer Industries Sdn Bhd (BFI).
Mr. Dominic Morley, Executive Principal and CEO of ISB, Ms. Vienna Law, General Manager of ISB, as well as ISB’s senior management team and the school’s passionate student Eco Warriors were also in attendance.
In welcoming remarks, Mr. Dominic Morley said, “This year, International School Brunei celebrates its 60th anniversary. In achieving this historic milestone, we are proud to begin the celebrations with today’s planting of 60 trees to commemorate our proud 60-year history. I would like to extend our warm gratitude and appreciation to the Deputy Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the Ministry of Education for attending as guest of honour, to the Brunei Climate Change Office for collaborating with us in this important tree planting event, and to our corporate sponsors for their support in this green initiative.”

The tree planting activity was inaugurated by Yang Mulia Awang Aliuddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Core Education), Ministry of Education along with Dato Seri Paduka Haji Ahmad bin Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Bakti Di-Raja Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Isa, ISB Board Chairman and Mr. Abdul Matiin bin Kasim, Deputy Head at the Brunei Climate Change Office.
Representatives from sponsoring companies, the ISB Board of Directors and ISB Eco Warriors were then invited to plant trees in various areas around the school.
After the trees were planted, Mr. Dominic Morley presented tokens of appreciation to the guest of honour, event partner, and corporate sponsors.
2024 is ISB’s 60th anniversary year, and the ’60 Trees to Celebrate 60 Years’ initiative is one of the many exciting events organised in line with celebrating the achievement of this important milestone.
