About the School
About the School
ISB is a fully inclusive 2-18 year co-educational day and boarding school. It comprises Early Years, Primary and Secondary Sections that work closely together in a distinctive, friendly family atmosphere. Fourteen hundred+ students, two hundred members of staff, forty-three different nationalities in one unique place; where each individual matters and educational standards and facilities are world-class.
Academic success is at the core of the school mission, not forgetting a strong emphasis on the self-development of students through involvement in a wide range of sport, music, art, drama and outdoor education.
ISB is proud to be a not-for-profit school, where all revenue goes back into making the school a place where students, not costs, are the primary driver of improvement. ISB is governed by a voluntary, elected Board of Directors and they are an important part of the school community. Their primary responsibilities are to make strategic decisions about resource investment and in ensuring that statutory legal obligations are met.
Any correspondence with Board Members or enquiries for further details or information should be routed through to Karen Tsen (firstname.lastname@example.org).
A Warm Welcome From The Principal
A Warm Welcome from
Here at ISB we prepare our students for a bright future by ensuring that they acquire the skills necessary to be successful job-seekers in the 21st century, whilst also developing traditional values and qualities required to become responsible and active global citizens.
ISB combines an excellent academic reputation with a family-friendly, community feel. In 2015. our new multi-million dollar campus opened in Bandar Seri Begawan, bringing with it the very best of educational, sporting and arts facilities. Our other site at Kuala Belait is smaller, yet still offers an memorable experience. Being situated in such contrasting locations, within a country known for its natural, untouched beauty, helps ISB to develop our all-round curriculum, with a strong commitment to extra curricular activities and a particular emphasis on the Eco projects we proudly embrace. Our site in Bandar is the only ‘Greenmark-Approved’ school on Borneo, gained through intelligent design and student input.
As with any international school, we have an excellent track record for academic attainment. However, this is only a part of what we offer. I strongly believe that the purpose of education should be to develop the whole child. A young person is more than the sum of their examination results. At ISB we achieve this in an inclusive, supportive and nurturing environment, aspiring to help each student achieve to his or her full potential in whatever area of expertise or interest they wish to grow. We have a sophisticated student monitoring and care system which enables us to deliver a more personalised educational experience.
ISB students are happy, confident, supported and rightly proud of their achievements and their school. I hope our website gives you a sense of this and a feel for who we are. Should you wish to come and visit our school to see this for yourself, we would love to welcome you at any time.
Dr. Steven Geraghty
CIS Accreditation Information
Council of International Schools
International School Brunei is currently accredited through the Council of International Schools (CIS) www.cois.org, having successfully achieved initial accreditation status in 2005. Successful CIS accreditation means that academic attainment and pastoral care frameworks have met detailed criteria which rate the school to the same, or higher, standard compared with over 700 other international schools around the world.
ISB is very proud to hold CIS accreditation; it serves to highlight and confirm the unique nature the school as a place in which 1400+ students, comprising 46 different nationalities and speaking 39 different languages are developing qualities such as open-mindedness and global thinking. The accreditation cycle takes place over 10 years.
The process of quality assurance is cyclical; ISB is in the process of ongoing CIS Accreditation Processes which culminate in February 2018 with another re-accreditation Team Visit from a group of teachers and education leaders appointed by CIS.
The Steering Committee
The CIS Steering Committee coordinates the administration of the Accreditation Process, which includes the administration of the parent, staff and student surveys, selection of the sub committees for the Self-Review and the writing of the main self-evaluation reports.
The Chair of the team can be contacted should you have any further queries regarding this process:

History and Development of ISB
The Development of ISB
School at Tapak Kuda from 1970 to 1986
ISB has a long and proud tradition of educating expatriates and locals alike, stemming from small beginnings over 50 years ago. Datin Glass, a senior government officer’s wife, started a tutorial group for her daughter and two friends in 1964 at her home in Jalan Perayaan. She taught them by means of a correspondence course sent out and marked by the South Australian Correspondence School.
The numbers grew quite rapidly and by 1970 the school moved to a site provided by the Government of Brunei Darussalam at 34 Tapak Kuda and was known locally as the Supervision School. By February 1971 there were 30 kindergarten pupils and 31 primary students. The enrollment continued to grow and by 1974 it had reached 160. In 1976, the school became the International School (B) Bhd, employing trained teachers and the then current principal, Mrs Bennett adopted an education based on the UK primary school principles.

ISB continued to thrive. It outgrew the Tapak Kuda premises and moved to the Government-leased premises at Jalan Dato Haji Ahmad, Berakas in 1985, through a combination of vigorous fund raising, debentures, bank loans and royal support.
ISB was officially opened by Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Masna binti Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien on 9th March 1986, eight years after securing the lease. In 1993, ISB extended its curriculum to admit lower secondary students.

In 2001, ISB achieved full post-16 status when it was authorised by the International Baccalaureate Organisation to offer their prestigious Diploma programme. In 2006, ISB opened a small Primary branch in Kuala Belait.
International School Brunei, NOW…..
ISB, a not-for-profit school, has developed a strong eco-focus in its curriculum and extracurricular activities and this focus will continue into the future. In 2015, the school relocated to a new 22 acre site in Kg Sungai Hanching, with purpose-built buildings and facilities for a great learning and teaching experience for students and staff alike. The inclusion of a 180-bed Boarding Residence improved our international offering, allowing students from abroad to enjoy the ISB experience. The new build also incorporated the BCA Greenmark Award, one of the few buildings in Brunei to be assessed successfully for this.
The new campus allows us to build on our academic and extra-curricular activities whilst remaining true to our green philosophy. Plans are also in hand for a large recycling collection centre and examples of sustainable energy conservation methodology in ISB’s new CARE Centre.
