ISB TechKids Podcast

Series Introduction

Welcome to the ISB TechKids podcast series.

If you are new to the concept of podcasting, the simplest way to think about it would be as a voice recording played over the internet as and when needed. It should immediately become obvious that this form of technology has numerous educational benefits covering a wide range of learning opportunities.

The ISB TechKids podcasts are broadcast at regular intervals except during periods when the school is closed. The podcasts are almost entirely planned, created, managed and edited by the TechKids while Mr. Lowe acts as the advisor for each podcast.

All music used during the podcasts is found at “The Free Music Archive” and is available under various Creative Commons Licenses and are always clearly attributed to the artists and used in compliance with the relevant Creative Commons license.

Each of the ISB TechKids Podcasts are licensed under the Creative Commons:

The TechKids, ISB and I hope you enjoy the broadcasts and appreciate your support.

Introduction to Podcast #1

In their first ever podcast, the presenters Caleb and Willy welcomed Lachlan from the school’s ECO-Action group and had a brief discussion about why we need to be concerned about saving the rainforests. The boys then talk about a recent FOBISSEA event many students at the school were involved in.

Mark Cheng brings ISB a strong message for would be an optimists.

As part of our National Environment Day (week) we invited Mark Cheng – a 23 years odd entrepreneur and environment from Singapore to inspire lower secondary students.

He used a series of short videos and animations to get his message across to our students. Mark’s stunning CV is attached and I would recommend him for nay event requiring input on global poverty or environment degradation. He can be contacted at markcheng@avelife.org

Mark was loaned to ISB by AsiaInc Forum who had engaged him to speak at their National Environment conference held in Brunei.

Brendon De-demonise sharks at ISB

Brendon Sing of Shark Guardian visited Brunei in June to talk to ISB students about the role of sharks on the global eco-system. He adjusted his multi media presentation to suit a range of year groups from Kindy toY10 and got the message across that sharks need not be scary.

He also showed students how we are managing to exterminate so many species of shark by taking more than 100 million of them out of the ocean each year, mostly for the shark fin trade.

Brendon is a very engaging speaker and his presentation is very professional. I can thoroughly recommend him if you would be interested in him presenting at your school contract him at info@sharkguardian.org

Eco Week - March 2011

Primary school students celebrated the wonders of our world during a dedicated week of environmental education. The aim of the activities was to guide students on their journey to sustainability, to explore ways of working together on environmental issues, and to raise awareness.

Some of the activities students were involved in were: Eco registration time, No power hour, Pass on the aper, Eco poetry, Shared local snacks, Eco pledges, Making games from recycled materials, Green day, Eco Songs, Can recycling, T-shirt designing, an Idea competition and an Eco ssembly."

Pond / Tree Nursery Club

A group of students have volunteered to help out once a week on a Wednesday afternoon to support some of the school based eco projects

The Pond - at the back of Rm 25 is the school pond.  This requires regular clearing and after a few years of adding new life to the pond, the dividends are paying off.  Every week leaves need clearing from the pond to allow the wildlife to  grow and the students generally help with the maintaining of the area.

The Tree Nursery - once a year our students go to collect seedlings from the forest floor. These are then brought back to our tree nursery which is next to the school swimming pool. On a regular basis, we make sure that the seedlings are weeded and that they are getting enough water. After about a year in the school nursery we then find new homes for our trees to grow.

Trees that we have nurtured include the Casuarina, Gaharu, Kerving Sindor and Tulong.

Tree Site at RBA - one of the Year 9 CAS days was to plant trees in an area allocated by the Royal Brunei Recreation Club.  This small plot of land at the entrance of the club is
amass with vegetation.  In this small area, trees were planted and students on a regular
basis (once a fortnight during term time) attend to the site, weeding around the trees and
ensuring that the surrounding grass does not strangle the up and coming trees.

One of the jobs given to our eco students is to create the tags using old phone  cards.  We had to stick our Million Trees Logo labels on the cards and tag them up.

Recycling at ISB

Recycling bins are commonplace around the ISB campus. One of the ways ISB aims to reduce its ecological footprint is through its recycling program. The program has grown from only recycling cans, paper and PET to include mixed paper products, steel cans, aluminium cans, clothes, batteries and plastic bottles, e-waste and food scraps.

Beach clean up

ISB, along with the Beach Bunch and members of the community from local schools join together every year for a Beach Clean Up. A family event aimed at promoting awareness of beach cleanliness and action in protecting beaches from pollution, the Beach Clean Up has grown each year to include different beaches and more members of the community.

ISB Helps Save the Coral Reef

Having existed for more than 500 million years and known as the 'rainforests of the sea', coral reefs are not only breathtakingly beautiful, but are also extremely important in maintaining the ocean's biological diversity. Due to human activity however, these brilliant 'undersea gardens' are now under threat. Coral reefs are at risk everyday from global warming, pollution, marine debris and almost any human alteration of the environment. If these trends continue, and with 20 percent of the world's coral reefs already dead, it is estimated we may lose them completely within the next 30-50 years.

Green Assembly

Assemblies are a great way for students to showcase their creativity and raise awareness about issues they learn about. On top of announcements and updates about eco activities in school, a special assembly is dedicated to Earth Day every year. This special assembly is hosted by the student ECO Action Team and includes musical performances, videos, and special projects. In the past, students have written their own ECO songs, showcased impressive fashion designs made out of used materials, given out seedlings to encourage planting, and presentations about issues such as the destruction of the earth.

Class Activities

While the eco initiatives outside the classroom are endless, the green mindset has also made a presence inside the classroom. Teamwork activities, orientation programmes and PSE (Personal and Social Education) lessons are incorporating activities such as recycle-ware fashion designing and others to spur students to be more creative and open minded about the possibilities of green activities.

Green Class Competition

The ongoing school-wide competition requires classes to gain points by fulfilling the ECO Action Team's topic criteria such as energy, healthy living and transport. The competition aims to create awareness of ways students can incorporate eco practices on campus and motivate students to act responsibly toward the environment. The winning classes in Primary and Secondary will be announced in June 2011.

Tree Planting

ISB's dedication to re-afforestation around Borneo is not only limited to fundraising for the Million Trees Project. Students in the community are also actively involved in tree-planting efforts in Brunei, such as the Badas 50,000 trees project. Trips are also planned in conjunction with local schools and businesses to spend a few hours during weekends planting seedlings. ISB is in the midst of implementing a FOBISSEA tree planting scheme whereby schools are invited to buy 10,000 trees to be planted in the Kinabatangan region of Sabah, Malaysia as part of the WWF Corridor of Life.

Recycle Wear

Move over Gucci and Prada! This year's latest trends were couture ensembles made from dollies, rubbish bags, tissue paper and can tabs. The theme: recycle, the inspiration: saving planet Earth!
A lovely assortment of year 12 girls got together and created some gorgeous recycled outfits. Using only the materials they had lying around school, their homes or even the dump! The overall activity was organised for ISB's Earth Day assembly in order to inspire and motivate everyone to get into the 'save your planet' mood. While models strutted their stuff down ISB's runway, everyone cheered and congratulated our designers.

W.E.E.P

A lot of the time, the responsibility of 'saving the planet' seems too big to tackle, too much to aim for. So this year, we decided to emphasise on the small things we do cumulatively that makes a big difference. This was summarised into four letters: WEEP. Save Water, Energy, Environment and Paper.
A short presentation from the student environmental council aimed to highlight the things we love, and stand to lose if we didn't take action. We were reminded about the carbon footprints we leave behind and reflections on what we can do to change our planet's future. It's amazing how the beauty of a Natural earth can still warm the hearts of people, and spur our motivation to stay green for Earth! So to avoid ever seeing an earth made up of landfills and murky polluted waters, the students were all encouraged to WEEP, in support of our school's environmental efforts.

Can You Save It?

A performance from the drama club and some brave teachers really got the message going with the Jackson 5 adapted song- 'Can You Save it?' lyrics by Ardyn Geddes. With that, everyone can sing along and "spread the world and teach to all, who don't understand just what they can do..."
