Gazetted as a Nature Reserve in 2000 it covers an area of 37.916 hectares consisting of mostly kerangas forest. The park is one of the few remaining primary forest still intact within the periphery of Kuching City.

Description: Tree reaching 50 m and 1.2 m diameter.
Fruit with large nut, 3.7 x 2.5 cm; longer lobes to 18 x 3 cm and shorter ones 13 x 0.8 cm.
Habitat: Mixed Dipterocarp Forest at altitudes to 700 m
Soil: Clay-rich soils and also sandy clay.
Distribution: Endemic in Borneo
Special features: Belongs to the Red Meranti group of timber trees.

Family: Sapindaceae (same family as rambutan)
Description: Tree reaching 9-14 (exceptionally 40) m with a short trunk and a wide, rounded crown. Dioecious. Leaves alternate, compound, with 2-5 pairs of glossy leaflets. Flowers small, greenish, in branched axillary or terminal panicles. Fruit round to ovoid, about 5-7.5 cm in length, with a bumpy red, purple or yellow peel. The pulp is white or yellowish, translucent, juicy, sweet and aromatic and with a single seed the size and shape of an almond.
Habitat: Primary Mixed Dipterocarp Forest or sometimes Secondary Forest, on flat lands, slopes and riverbanks. From sea level to about 1,950 m elevation.
Soil: Clay, loam or sometimes rocky soil
Distribution: Native to Southeast Asia (Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines).
Culture: Grows well where abundant moisture is available year round, although it does tolerate brief periods of drought. Best growth is achieved in fertile, well drained soils. Regular fertilization will also improve growth and fruiting.
The most important related species is the Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum), but there are at least 30 other wild species of Nephelium with edible fruits.

Scientific name: Baccaurea angulata
Family: Euphorbiaceae (same family as tampoi and rubber tree)
Description: May reach 8 m tall, profusely branched. Flowers (yellow) and fruits (red) colourful so may be planted as an ornamental. Fruits are angular and inside is white, juicy, sourish-sweet edible pulp.
Habitat: Primary lowland Dipterocarp forest
Special feature: Fruits borne on the trunk
Soil: Stony, yellow
Indigenous (occurs nowhere else) to Borneo

Petai
Scientific name: Parkia speciosa
Family: Leguminosae (bean family)
Description: Can reach 50 m in height and 50-100 cm in diameter. Leaves have feathery appearance due to small leaflets. White flowers borne in heads hanging from stout green stalks up to 50 cm long. Pods hang down from heads in bunches.
Habitat: Lowland and submontane forest , also planted around villages.
Special feature: Flowers bat-pollinated, seeds smell of garlic, very popular and fruit/seeds sold in markets. Green seeds are nutritious (protein and minerals) and are eaten young or old, raw or cooked, have a strong taste.
Soil: Various types including waterlogged soil
Occurs in: Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo

Dabei
Scientific name: Canarium odontophyllum
Family: Burseraceae (Frankincense and Myrrh come from trees belonging to this family)
Description: Tree reaching about 20 m tall. Seedlings flower after about four years. Bunches of white flowers can be seen on the crown. The ovoid fruits ripen black and have a single large seed.
Habitat: Common in Mixed Dipterocarp Forest on clay soils. Domesticated in Sarawak and extensively cultivated in Sibu and Kapit divisions.
Special feature: Trees are either male (pollen) or female (fruit) so need one of each to set fruit
Soil: Alluvial is best
Occurs in: Borneo, Sumatra, Philippines

Durian isu
Scientific name: Durio oxleyanus
Family: Bombacaceae (same family as baobab tree)
Description: Can reach 40 m tall and the trunk can be more than 1 m in diameter. Fruits greyish-green or yellow with long sharp spines. There is very sweet, yellow to orange flesh on the glossy brown seeds.
Habitat: Lowland rainforest
Soil: Moist; especially frequently flooded clay-rich alluvium
Occurs in: Borneo; Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra

Nyekek, Pakan, Durian kuning
Scientific name: Durio kutejensis
Family: Bombacaceae (same family as baobab tree)
Description: Tree about 24 m, and trunk to 40 cm diameter, branches from low down. Flower clusters bright crimson. Fruit ripens golden-yellow and has short, blunt spines and is easy to open. Flesh orange-yellow, sweet, on glossy brown seeds.
Habitat: Grows wild in Mixed Dipterocarp Forest (mainly in Miri and Bintulu Divisions) but is also commonly planted.
Special feature: Golden scales on leaf undersurface
Soil: Fertile clay, cannot tolerate waterlogged conditions.
