Here is a flavour of life and learning at ISB, from the point of view of a selection of students and staff across the Secondary School.
“As a new teacher to ISB and to working overseas, I think Brunei must be one of the easiest places to cut your international teeth. Many things are familiar, from driving on the left to the same power sockets in your home. The people of Brunei are gentle and friendly, and you feel safe being out and about. But the biggest surprise comes from the students of ISB who will welcome you without reservation and will show their genuine appreciation for your efforts in making their lessons interesting and stimulating.” (Chris Wilding, Head of DT)
“ISB is an inspirational school for anyone who goes to it. Both teachers and students alike are appreciated for who they are. As no one in the school is left out, everyone easily takes their place in this caring community. Education sets a challenge for the students at ISB that enriches their minds.” (Darragh, Year 13)
“For me, ISB echoes the warm hospitality and friendliness of the Bruneian people, effortlessly providing a welcoming ‘family’ environment for both staff and students alike. It actively serves as a second home where lasting friendships and fulfilling professional relationships are forged. ISB is renowned for going the ‘extra mile’ in meeting the myriad needs of its tight-knit international community, recognising individual potential and developing a strong team spirit.” (Ai Ling Wong, Head of Oriental Languages)
“ISB is a school full of great opportunities and great people. The school’s environmentally friendly outlook inspires everyone to do what they can and makes people more aware of their surroundings. In effect, the students think of others, get along well with their teachers, and acknowledge events around the world. Our school learns through the diverse range of cultures present in the school, the fun and interesting classes, and through a myriad of educational opportunities.” (Aneesah, Year 11)
“Since my arrival at ISB in August the teaching staff have made me feel particularly welcome. This has been especially helpful to me as I am new to international teaching. I have also found the students here possess a real respect for learning and see both the boys and the girls as a real pleasure to teach.” (Gareth Wailes, Head of Business & Economics)
“ISB to me is like a second home, no doubt. It has been my school for 10 amazing years. I love everything about the school, from Primary to Secondary to the activities we do to help the community and our environment. In my opinion, ISB is the most eco-friendly, caring and most brilliant school I know. Every day is an educational adventure full of fun and challenges and I can’t wait for the adventures in store for my class each day. That is what ISB – my favourite school – means to me.” (Geoffrey, Year 8)
“The children are a delight. Seriously. To use a football metaphor, it's like playing in the Italian league - because no-one is fouling you every five seconds, you have the time and space to do things properly. I like to get the most I can out of every period and the children respond to teachers who work them hard and effectively. The sociable side is great too: there’s a very sociable expat community, and the locals are very friendly too. I hope I'm not painting too rosy a picture. I'm just finding that this place is suiting me very well. (David Riekie, Teacher of Maths)
“I have been at ISB for nine years and I love it here. ISB provides a very friendly learning environment where all students are eager to learn and participate in classes. Everyone is accepted here, whether a student or a member of staff: there is a place for everyone, and nobody is ever excluded. I love ISB! It is a great school where everybody is friendly and hardworking. I especially like the “Growing Green Minds” project as I care a lot about the environment. I hope to continue the rest of my schooling here.” (Annabelle, Year 9)
“I moved to Brunei in 2009 with my husband, and the sense of community was apparent from the outset. The enthusiasm and commitment that you see from both students and staff at the school is the reason why I want to stay. As a mother of young children, living in a country where family comes first is excellent. As a family, we spend a great deal of time visiting numerous pools, playgrounds and parks. The housing in Brunei is large and this allows us plenty of space for play-dates and hosting dinner parties. Much of our socializing takes place in a wide range of restaurants, at the Yacht Club or at friends’ homes. Brunei is a safe place to live. It is a multicultural hub for families that seek safe and relaxed living.” (Rowena Bracken, Head of Drama)
“I like the fact that it is an international school and there are a diverse number of cultures. It is very easy to make friends because everyone is used to everyone being their own individual person, and people are accepting: everyone knows everyone. I also like the school's eco programme: it is very successful and people contribute to eco activities because everyone is aware of the different eco programs around the school.” (Apeksha, Year 10)
