Million Trees Nursery for ISB, 20th April 2007

The ISB student Eco Council visited the Pusat Perhutanan Brunei Sungai Liang today, to learn how to germinate and nurture forest seedlings. The “hands on” seminar was given by Mr Patrick Lau of K.N. Nursery (B) Sdn Bhd who showed the students how to prepare the growing medium and transplant the seedlings.
The students also learned about the indigenous trees of Brunei.
David Taylor, ISB Director commented that the visit was in preparation for establishing ISB’s own nursery to support it’s Million Trees Project that was launched by Nobel peace prize winner Wangari Maathai at the Empire Theatre in March. He went on to say that the students are learning the value of trees and the part they can play in the sustainability of our planet. “We are acting locally and thinking globally” he said. Saplings will be prepared for tree planting projects in Brunei and the Heart of Borneo Project.
ISB is very grateful to Hj Saidin bin Salleh, Director of Forestry for supporting its project and to Dayang Haktu Mabong and Awang Asmalee Khairuddin for making the nursery visit possible.
ISB welcomes enquiries from other schools and enterprises interested in being involved in the Million Trees Project as a way of maintaining bio diversity and carbon offset.
