Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu has planted 4080 trees within the urban area of KK in support of the spirit of Heart of Borneo and the ISB Million Trees Project.
ISB Director David Taylor was invited to the launch of the DBKK Tree Planting on Saturday 16th June where he spoke of the importance of sustainable development and what the Heart of Borneo means to the island and the world.
The guest of honour at the event Datuk Hj Ahmad bin Lope Abd Aziz, President of Sabah Bumiputra Chamber of Commerce standing in for Mayor Datuk Iliyas bin Ibrahim, spoke of the importance of making the young generation aware of environmental issues and the role they can play in making the Heart of Borneo initiative a reality.
The event was attended by students and principals from twenty schools all of whom had been presented with the task of planting 204 trees in the vicinity of their schools.
David Taylor ISB director presented each school representative with a “Million Trees” certificate featuring Prof Wangari Maathai, 2004 Nobel Peace Laureate who launched the project in Brunei in March 2007. Students were also presented with a booklet about the Heart of Borneo which had been published jointly by CfBT, WWF and the Brunei British High Commission and launched at the ISB Borneo Global Issues Conference V, earlier in the year.
The DBKK tree planting is part of a ten year programme which is pledging trees to the ISB Million Trees project on an annual basis.
