Local Schools Join In Eco-Council Open Morning
Saturday, 1st September, 2007

15 schools within Brunei attended an environmental open morning held in ISB on Saturday, 1st of September, 2007. The day began with a talk given by Ms. Rachel Duce about ISB's environmental efforts in and around school, which appropriately started the day off as the itinerary for the rest of the morning. After the talk (and a small but sufficient snack), it was then time to split the guests into groups for a tour around school guided by members of the Eco-council; Ms. Hancox, Mr. Holmes, Mrs. Green, Mr. Green, Ms. Duce as well as the Environmental Council representatives.
The local school representatives were brought to see various "monuments" of ISB's involvement with the environment such as the tree nursery located by the swimming pool, the murals on the wall of the primary block, the eco-trailer, the pond behind the drama room and the recycling bins around school. During the tour, the local school representatives got a chance to learn about the systematic ‘green’ methods used in class such as the purpose of recycling boxes and printing quotas per student during ICT lessons. Mr. Sanderson also presented a lively impersonation of can collection and counting, which both visiting student and teacher representatives were equally engaged to be educated about,. During a small break in between the morning’s schedule, the guests were entertained by Mr. Sanderson and members of the Environmental Council with a sing-a-long. Delightfully, even our day's guests joined in with the chorus of the ever popular "We Will Recycle", a song sung to the tune of “We are the Champions”.
For the later part of the morning, the groups were split up again into two workshops; half went to experiment with their creativity, designing recycling boxes using only recyclable material. The other half of the group kept themselves occupied in the ICT room to browse environment websites found by clicking on the 'ISB and the Environment' link on the school's main page. Soon after the time and fun came near to an end, everyone gathered at the primary music room where the day first started. A final talk was delivered by Mr. Taylor about the Million Trees Project, and included a kind request for everybody present to utilize any newfound knowledge they gained from the open morning and use it towards the effort of improving the future of the Environment through careful everyday actions. The visiting schools each left with a re-usable goodie bag and ISB’s Environmental Council with a greater sense of service to the wider community.
